They Cannot Meet
They always have a reason they are abroad, traveling, on a job site, or unable to meet.
Updated July 2026 - Safety checklist
This age gap dating safety checklist helps older men and younger women slow down, protect privacy, avoid romance scams, and meet more safely. The rule is simple: no dating connection should require secrecy, money, private photos, or rushed trust before comfort exists.

Moving to private messaging too fast reduces your ability to block, report, or review the profile. The FTC warns that romance scammers often move from dating sites or apps to private communication, build trust, and then ask for money. Staying on-platform at first gives you more control.

They always have a reason they are abroad, traveling, on a job site, or unable to meet.
They ask for travel costs, medical help, gift cards, crypto, or emergency transfers.
They declare strong feelings quickly and use urgency to lower your judgment.

The FBI and FTC both warn about romance scams involving fake emergencies, travel needs, medical costs, investment opportunities, gift cards, wire transfers, and cryptocurrency. In age-gap dating, older men may be targeted because scammers assume they have savings. Younger women may be pressured through gifts, travel, or dependency.

| Step | Reason |
|---|---|
| Meet in public | Public settings make it easier to leave and reduce isolation risk. |
| Keep your own transportation | You should not depend on a new date to get home. |
| Tell someone you trust | A check-in plan adds a simple layer of safety. |
| Set a time limit | A shorter first meeting reduces pressure and keeps expectations realistic. |
Do not assume attention equals trust. Be cautious with urgent money requests, investment suggestions, suspicious photos, and people who avoid normal verification.
Do not let gifts, dinners, travel, or support make you feel obligated. A healthy older partner respects your no.
Safety does not end once you arrive. Keep sharing your live location with the trusted contact you told beforehand, and agree on a specific check-in point, such as a text once the date ends. If something feels off during the date, you do not need a polished excuse to leave early.
Arrange your own way home rather than relying on your date, even if it feels awkward to say so. After the meeting, check in with the person you told, and if anything about the interaction involved pressure, financial requests, or dishonesty, report it to the dating platform and, for suspected scams, to the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center.

Move slowly enough to think clearly. Rushing is often where bad decisions start.
A video call can help, but it is not complete proof. Use it with other safety steps.
Do not send it. End the conversation if pressure continues.
